A book by David Bornstein

How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs
and the Power of New Ideas

It's not often that you find a book with truly world-wide scope, even when the subject is changing the world. This book is a warm fact-filled engaging virtual encyclopedia of specific examples of individuals making changes that make a significant difference in people's lives. These stories are from Hungary, India, Brazil, all over the world about men and women who are pivotal in taking new grassroots actions that help people.

Instead of seeing social change as some kind of movement or abstract event, Bornstein looks at change as driven by individuals. And instead of concentrating on politicians or CEOs, the focus here is on teachers, parents, students, doctors, engineers, people who leverage small local changes into important region-wide difference.

Many of the people he writes about were discovered and are being encouraged by the Ashoka foundation, http://www.ashoka.org which has the goal of leveraging social change.

What is as amazing as the accomplishments themselves in these stories is the dedication of the people doing the work, and the number of obstacles each of them meet and overcome.
