Family: Anacardiaceae Habitat: In wet areas throughout eastern North America Form: Clonal shrubs to 5 feet tall or more Flower: Small yellow-green flowers in clusters Fruit: White berries Foliage: Compound leaves with smooth-edged leaflets. Twigs and shoots smooth. Notes: Every part of this plant is toxic. Leaves, stems, roots, and can cause poisoning from contact, ingestion, or inhalation of smoke. Clumps of this shrub turn bright red and orange in autumn.
